VW Beetle LSR Becomes World’s Fastest Beetle
World’s Fastest Beetle 2016
The Bonneville Salt Flats have long been a favorite place to test speeds. This year, it was the Volkswagen Beetle LSR model’s turn to see how fast she could go, and she went more than fast! The model reached a teeth-chattering 205.122 miles per hour, making it the world’s fastest Beetle as of 2016!
VW Beetle LSR Engine
The VW Beetle LSR was outfitted with a 2.0L turbo DI four-cylinder TSI® gasoline engine, which makes an appearance in several Volkswagen models. For the test, Volkswagen tweaked the powertrain so the Beetle could deliver 543 horsepower and 421 lb.-ft. of torque. Conventional engines like the ones that you will find in the models of our inventory usually produce about 210 horsepower.
Other Design Innovations
In order to make the VW Beetle LSR go as fast as possible, several changes were made. These changes included a lowered suspension, special wheels and tires designed to handle the salty terrain, and stripping the model’s interior. Safety precautions were taken with the help of an interior rollcage, fire suppression system, and a racing seat with harnesses. A set of parachutes were deployed to help the VW Beetle LSR slow down.
